It was a clear night at the Sanctuary. A calm breeze blew through, gently moving the branches of Sakura trees that lined the path leading up to the Sanctuary.
It was a quiet, peaceful night.
However, the same couldn’t be said about Sagittarius. They planet had just been through the bloodiest battle it had ever seen… and it was not the victor. Queen Annonaria was slain, killed by the Jackal of the Black Zodiac. King Arashi followed soon after.
Sagittarius had become the next planet added to the list of those destroyed by Lord Shi.
The princess of Sagittarius- better known as Neko- stumbled along the path leading up to the castle, the only survivor of the deadly battle. She wore her light armor and had her bow slung over her right shoulder. She had her right hand holding her left shoulder- a bloodied makeshift bandage could be seen underneath it, and fresh blood trickled down her left arm. Tears were streaming down her face, but she either didn’t notice or didn’t care.
She leaned against a tree for a moment…
~~
“Archers! Take your marks!” Neko demanded, pacing the corner of the castle wall. “You will defend your home! No mercy is to be given, for you will receive none!”
She pointed over the wall. “These are our enemy!” she cried out. “The monsters and warriors of Lord Shi! We will fight for our pride and for our honor!”
She whirled around, gesturing at the enemy in front of her. “At-”
Her command was cut of by a strangled cry that echoed from her mouth. She collapsed to the ground, clenching her shoulder- or rather, the arrow that was embedded in her shoulder.
“Neko-hime!” several voices cried out.
Neko looked down at the arrow, then bit her lip as she peered over her shoulder to see the other end sticking out her back.
“Break off the point!” she demanded.
“But Neko-hime!” someone- she believed it was Kotetsu- protested.
“Do it!” she demanded. “As your princess, I am ordering you to break the point off the arrow!”
Kotetsu reached forward, biting his lip. “On three.” He said quietly, grasping the bloody arrow point. “One- Two- Three-” One three, he swiftly broke the arrow point off.
Neko cried out in pain, slumping forwards and breathing heavily. The next step would hurt the most… She clenched her bloody hand around the shaft of the arrow. Her breath caught in her throat as she prepared herself…
And she yanked the arrow out of her shoulder, screaming in pain. Kotetsu had pulled a bandage out and had begun to wrap her shoulder.
She threw the arrow to the side where it clattered to the ground.
**
Neko stumbled forwards again. She had to get to the sanctuary! A fresh wave of pain emanated from her shoulder, and she bit her lip to keep from crying out. She *had* to get to the sanctuary. She had to let everyone know what happened…
She leaned against another three, closing her eyes. Maybe if she just rested a little, it would be easier to get to the sanctuary…
~~~
"Get up!" Morte snapped as she landed with a soft clack. She was in breeches, a black shirt, and a trenchcoat once again, which was an odd fashion for a woman. "Get up or I'll leave you to die." Her black wings were only partially folded, which meant she wanted to get going soon. "We're going to have a hard time getting through, but you have to get up and move on your own to me. Otherwise you won't recover, no matter how much Shukusei-sama helps you." She reached out a hand towards Neko, waiting for the girl.
Though they were not obvious, Morte also had wounds from the battle. But she had changed clothes and hurried out to get Neko from the pathway leading to the sanctuary. "We'll return to Sagittarius after Destruction and Death have finished their duty."
~~~
Neko looked over at Morte and pushed herself off the tree, stumbling forwards. She reached her left hand out slowly (her right hand was still covering the wound in her shoulder) and bit her lip as she grabbed Morte's outstreched hand.
"Mother's dead." she said blankly, her voice quiet. "So is father. Jackal killed them."
~~~
"I know." Morte sighed sadly. "I was fighting by their side, but just like everyone else, they sent me back for you. I'm sorry I was late." And as Neko grabbed her hand, the more serious of the girl's wounds began to mend themselves. She pulled Neko close before wrapping her arms about the girl in a gentle embrace before taking off and flying quickly and with ease inside the holy barrier that protected the sanctuary.
Shukusei stood there, waiting for Morte, and allowed Neko to lean against her as she assisted her into the grand palacial temple she lived in.
Once everyone was out of sight, Morte quickly closed the gates and barricated them with several heavy objects as well as a holy seal that was written on paper that Shukusei had given her. Placing it where the doors of the gate met, she watched as it sank into the wood, strengthening the barrier. She then went to each entrance, doing the exact same thing. "This will protect us for a while if they come here..." She sighed.
~~~
"It's not your fault." Neko said blandly, letting her hand drop from the wound in her shoulder. It had mostly healed- it still hurt a bit to move it, but not as much as it had before, and it was no longer bleeding. She knew that it would leave a scar, though.
"If it's anyone's fault, it's mine." she muttered as Shukusei led her into the sanctuary. "I didn't listen to mother when she told me to leave. I wanted to stay and fight..." she continued, then chocked out a sob, tears still streaming down her cheeks.
Her breath hitched in her throat as she continued sobbing.
